This exercise was another which highlights some of the tremendous potential of ArcGIS.
In my work as a surveyor, I have previously had to insert aerial photography into CAD drawings, referencing the image to physical ground control points of known position.
The ArcMap routine for this is smooth, elegant, and a general joy to use.
From a surveyor's perspective, seeing the results of the residuals come together was particularly pleasing. In surveying, the typical method for adjusting ground control networks is least squares analysis, and ArcGIS utilizes the method supremely in a way which is intuitive and requires no special knowledge of linear algebra or vector analysis topics to produce an excellent result. This was just a lab I enjoyed.
Incidentally, by making the south image the one lowest in display order, the seam in the middle of the picture is made less obtrusive.
